More and more women are opting for weaves, both for protective and styling reasons. There are different hair rules for weaves depending on what kind of weave you have.

Here are some great tips on how to take care of your extensions:

1. Picking your extensions.

It all starts with picking the best extensions for your hair. Look for a texture that mimics your own hair and pick great quality hair that can look good for the duration you want to have it on.

2. Get a good hairdresser.

The first step to having a great looking weave is to get somebody who knows what they are doing. A hairdresser who knows what they are doing will make your weave look good for a long time.

3. Combing & detangling.

Do not rip your comb through your weave, it will damage your hair. Remember that the weave is sewn onto your hair and the tugging can make your hair cut. Detangle from the bottom up as you would do with your own hair preferably when wet.

4. Drying.

Experts say it is best to let your weave air dry. But if you must use a blow drier stick to the lowest heat setting when drying or using heated styling tools. For straight hair use a wide toothed comb for extensions and for curlier weave use your fingers.

5. Washing your weave and your hair.

Use a sulfate free shampoo and mix it with water. Make sure you get the shampoo mix in between your braids and into your hair. Lightly massage your scalp in between the braids. Rinse and then go through the steps again.
Wash your hair every 7-14 days depending on whether you are working out or sweating a lot. Wet the hair with lukewarm water, and use a mild shampoo.

6. Drying your hair.

Make sure you dry your hair completely so that it doesn’t smell like mildew or get mold. You can sit under a dryer or sit in the hot sun and let your hair dry completely.

7. Leave-in conditioner.

After every shampoo, apply leave in conditioner to both the weave and your natural hair. Massage it in gently. You can also apply the leave in conditioner to the dry weave.

8. Anti-bacterial weave spray.

You need to use an antibacterial weave spray to kill bacteria, detangle it and keep it fresh. You can use it once a day especially for a weave that’s twisted, worn in locks or braided.
